Jan Chaple Johnson
Jan (pictured to the left) is in her last year at United Theological Seminary where she is pursuing
dual degree: a Master of Divinity and a Master of Art in Specialized
Ministry (Care-Giving and Counseling). She has over 16 years
experience in the healthcare field and holds degrees in Medical Office
Administration (A.S.) and Health Administration (B.S.) from Clayton
State University in Georgia.
Jan grew up in Birmingham,
Alabama (where her passion for social justice was activated during the
civil rights movement of the 60s). She lived in the Atlanta area
for 25 years before moving to Dayton to attend seminary. Jan
“grew up” in the Presbyterian Church, left for some
“wilderness wandering” years, before returning in
1979. In 1994, she joined a United Methodist congregation, where
she was the chair of the Health and Wellness committee for 2
years. Her activities during this time were instrumental in
hearing God’s call into a Health and Healing ministry. Jan
has also been active in music ministry: singing in choirs, ringing
handbells, and, with great joy, directing children’s
choirs.
Jan began attending Eternal Joy in January 2006 as her contextual
placement, but soon realized that this was where God was calling her to
ministry. She is now a member and a candidate for MCC
ordination. Jan has long felt that every person born is a child
of God and deserves to be treated as such. At MCC she has found a
denomination that embodies this belief and actively works for the
acceptance and nurturing of all people in the way she believes Jesus
accepts and nurtures each of us. The journey to healing,
wholeness, and shalom is a major focal point of her ministry.
Jan has one son, Shawn, who
lives in the Atlanta area and two granddaughters, Lilli and Allana, who
live with their mother in Houston. She loves being Gramma and
wishes she could see her granddaughters more. Jan has been doing
counted cross-stitch for a number of years and is now learning to
quilt, knit, and explore other avenues of fabric art. In her
“spare” time, she enjoys reading mysteries.
