National Coming Out Day Prayer Breakfast
This is one of our most popular and anticipated events.
This annual event was begun in 1996 in response to a similar event by a
local conservative, homophobic religious group. Every year,
on the Saturday before National Coming Out Day, we gather at a local
restaurant for a fully catered breakfast that includes time to meet and
mingle with one another, a time of collective prayer for those coming
out, and a lecture by a featured speaker.
Some of our past speakers have included:
- Chris Glaser, openly gay author (The Word is Out, Coming
Out to God, Uncommon Calling), now pastoring Metropolitan Community
Church San Francisco.
- Father John J. McNeil, author of the classic book The Church and the Homosexual
- Justin Cannon, Phi Beta Kappa scholar and founder of
www.truthsetsfree.net. He was voted a Gen-Q Hero by Advocate
magazine.
- Virginia Ramey Mollenkott, theologian and author (Omnigender: A Trans-Religious Approach; Is the Homosexual My Neighbor?)
- Rev. Dr. Robert E. Goss, theologian and author (Jesus Acted
Up; Our Families, Our Values; Take Back the Word; and Queering Christ)
- Cathy Mong, social justice reporter for The Dayton Daily
News, and Rev. Beth Holten, pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church
in Dayton.
The next prayer breakfast is scheduled for October 11, 2008, with Mr. Jay Moore as a guest speaker. For
more information, call the church office (937.254.2087) or e-mail office@eternaljoymcc.org.
